  2. One idea for a MEmorial could be to post videos of interviews with WWII veterans to give people an idea of how the war affected American soldiers personally.

  3. Another good idea would be to put up slideshows of the destruction that the war caused in Japan and Europe. This would help people recognize the full effects of the war.

  4. Like the Vietnam MEmorial, the WWII MEmorial should include a feature that allows user to search for loved ones that may have been casualties of this war. It is also important to include a tribute to those in POW camps and internment camps through pictures and maybe displaying some of the horrific statistics of those who died.

  5. A good idea for a Memorial would be to make a collage of pictures, and list facts and first hand stories from World War II. This way people would be able to see and understand more about this war and the people who lost their lives.

  6. Along with the collage of pictures mentioned earlier, there could be footage of the soldiers in the war showing their determination to serve their country. I think this would show people how much they truly cared and hopefully people will take more time in the future to honor the deceased.

  7. I think that having the photos in the MEmorial is great, and also I did not even realize that this memorial was in Washington, it was very nice to learn. I think that adding on a few more links to things like general war information, and also maybe a link to a website that has information about the victims would be a useful thing to add.

  8. I have personally seen this memorial and it is very inspiring. In creating an electronic memorial I think one should also include information about the draft. There are a lot of soldiers willingly went and fought for their country but a lot of young men/boys were drafted and made to fight as well. We should capitalize on the sacrifice and the selflessness displayed by these men.

  9. Also, one video containing a mixture of interviews, pictures, and footage(if any) could be included in the MEmorial. The interviews and footage would connect the dots and tell the stories of the pictures. This would help people see how dedicated and patriotic our soldiers were.

  10. Like many people have said i think interviews and pictures would really be good. Like the Vietnam memorial it would make things clear to people and would show the soldiers determination.

  11. I have been to this memorial quite a few times, it is one of m favorites actually. I think a MEmorial would be a great addition to this memorial because like everyone has been saying, it doesn't quite show the full effect that the war had on people in this country, I think videos of first hand accounts would be a great addition, especially of men who were drafted and forced to fight in this war, I don't think anyone can really imagine how hard that would be.

  12. I had never even heard of this one before. I went to D.C. 3 years ago and visited every other memorial, but I never even knew that this was there. After reading about it though, I believe that while it does put you in a reverent frame of mind, it might not put enough emphasis on the sacrifices of the individual. I don't know maybe put up something about when the soldiers first came home to show the relief and joy.

  14. Like many people said about posting interviews, this website is tells the viewers infomation that was not known to many before. This website also shows pictures and videos about the event, which was good.

  15. I think that it would be a great idea to post personal stories in this MEmorial. Talking to veterans about how WWII changed their life or impacted their relationship with their family and friends. I think this would give a very personal feel and people would feel more emotionally connected to the MEmorial.

  16. The interviews are a great idea, the only problem there is that you may not find too many veterans left to interview. They would have to be at least 89 years old (if they were 18 by the start of the war in 1939 and keeping in mind that the US joined in 1941). It would be a good idea to try to incorporate pictures from D-Day and give the story about what happened and what the soldiers faced, so the pictorial collage would be good.

  17. I think it would be good to post videos of the actual war (maybe video from the world war II documentary in color, that was released earlier in the summer). It would give people today some kind of connection with a war that most of them have only heard about in history classes.

  18. There are so many great ideas that could make this MEmorial a success. I think that the best idea is interviews with actual veterans as well as pictures from throughout the war. The combination of the two would really make the MEmorial come to life and reveal a lot about the war and the people who fought it.

  19. Although there may not be many war veterans from World War II alive, it would be an excellent idea to get as many memoirs as possible. A personal account of the war and telling the stories of other men who sacrificed their life would make a moving addition. Also, instead of still pictures, maybe a virtual tour of the memorials would fully show the work put into remembering these brave men and women.

  20. Just as the actually memorial represents each state indivdually, the same should be done with the MEmorial. This left a major impact on me when i visited the memorial 2 years ago. Also, putting names on the page. Names will forever let the people that died in the war to remembered forever.

  21. The electronic MEmorial allows the creator to merge all of the aspects and horrors of WWII. It can be a spot that citizens can view the war in entirety, instead of just the holocaust, the devastation in Europe, etc. This will allow the stories to come together and people will gain a better understanding of the war.

  22. Adding videos of individuals walking through the real life memorial would show how people are still affected by the individual loss of WWII today. An effective form of communicating the tragedy felt could be used b making like a montage of soldiers and family accounts of the war.

  23. Its difficult to realistically envision yourself in someone elses position when the circumstances are so harsh. Detailing the overall scenario of WWII is important, but doesnt allow the audience to know how actual victims were emotionally impacted. Interviews with survivors are important because within a few years, there wont be any personal accounts left to record.

  24. I agree with all my peers that the need for individual stories, interviews, photos and even news reports during the time are necessary for a MEmorial on WWII. Although many of us have learned about the topic through school, none of us actually lived through that time period. It is important to be educated about all angles and stories of the war. War propaganda, and the effects not only oversees, but at home would be nice statistics as well. In a more abstract way, the families and business at home could be considered as victims of the war as well. In addition to stories from war veterans, stories from the loved ones at home and how the United States was then would be interesting. I really enjoy the "Did you know?" facts at the bottom of each page on the national park service website. While the short term tragedies and casualties are all imperative additions to an effective MEmorial, maybe the information on the social and long term effects of the war could be included as well. For example, the Holocaust genocide occurring during the time has forever changed the way world views and reacts to genocide. The prejudice against the Japanese-Americans due to fear led to internment camps in the United States. It was a devastating time for America and the world, and the goals of the MEmorial should serve to tell the stories and lives of the selfless veterans, how America was effected on the home front, how America's policies changed after wards, and how to prevent something like that from happening again. To conclude, each and every person should be able to learn something from the MEmorial, which is far more interactive and informative due to electracy.

  25. This MEmorial would need to include everything from the perspective of citizens who lived in American during the war, the soldiers who participated, and even the president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who was entering a third term at an extremely tense time of international relations. First, citizens sacrifice very much during the war in order to provide as much as possible to the American war effort. In order to document this, pictures of Victory Gardens, posters encouraging women and children to do their part, and documentaries of the sacrifices families made could be included. Soldiers from every branch of the military could also be interviewed or if that is not available, written stories or accounts of what happened to them could be used along with pictures of the battles they participated in. Finally, the MEmorial could go through the many decisions that Franklin Roosevelt had to make during the war and document his relations with his new allies, Churchill and Stalin.

  26. Another idea would be the use of media to display the result of all of the effort and lives spent on freedom. This could come through the depiction of a democratic Europe and the lives saved by the dismantling of the Nazi regime. Video of soldiers on the warfronts could also be used to commemorate those that had been in the conflict.

  27. I find the most interesting memorials include personal stories and interviews of soldiers during the war since you can get a picture of what someone actually went through during the war, as opposed to just statistics. It gives the war much more depth and allows you to visualize it more.

  28. I agree that adding personal stories and pictures of individuals in the war would make the MEmorial more interesting. A timeline as well could help attribute to the website and possibly adding links to news articles printed during the time of the war.

  29. WWII could be considered the biggest war in the history of the world. with this in mind, a MEmorial could include not only the soldiers that fought in the war but also a slide show of American citizens in the work place that aided the Military with supplies to win the high stakes war.

  30. I think that the MEmorial should include different themed sections that memorialize each of the different fronts, such as one section for Pearl Harbor, one for the war in the Pacific, and one for the European campaign.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I agree that there should be different sections, especially for the different parts of the war. I believe emphasis should be increased on the Normandy American Cemetery. I personally feel that specific cemetery is not as noticed as the other memorials of WWII, which is a shame given that over 1,500 Americans died on the beaches of Normandy.

  32. I think that would be interesting to separate it into the different fronts. Family members of those in certain fronts would feel more of a personalized experience than just WWII as a whole. If I went to visit, I would want to see my grandfather's front in more detail than just a slight mention of it.

  33. working off of what Zack said, not only should there be different sections, but there should be testemonials from people of different possitions who were there. for example, one from an infantryman and one from an officer to get the different perspecitves.

  34. I agree. Having people in the MEmorial that are directly related to the war can really add more emphasis on to why this MEmorial is created in the first place. It adds more emotions to the MEmorial itself.

  35. I thought it was cool how the memorial had statues instead of just a wall of names. The statues draw attention and actually provide a visual of the soldiers who are being memorialized
